Mohamed Raafat

I am a mechanical engineering PhD candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park (graduating in August 2017).
I have a Master's degree from MIT and a Bachelor's degree from Cairo University, both in Mechanical Engineering.

My PhD work in the Smart Materials and Structures Research Center involves deisgning, building and testing tensegrity structures with various configurations to exhibit specific static and dynamic characteristics. You can find here some of the research and engineering projects I have worked on over the years, which have helped me develop and hone my skills in several areas including CAD, FEA, rotordynamics, vibration testing, experiment design + DAQ + data analysis, programming, material characterization and testing, 3D printing, microfluidics, photolithography, soft lithography (PDMS), and one or two other things..

I thoroughly enjoy being an engineer and a researcher, learning how things work, solving problems, and designing and building products and gadgets. I also enjoy learning new skills and techniques that expand my toolbox. In my free time, I like to tinker with computers (coding, learning new languages, OS's, etc.), play the piano, and spend quality time with family and friends.
